Cultural Activities and Programs

Saturday cultural classes are available to Native American students in kindergarten through grade 7. Classes provide tribal and cultural awareness by storytelling, history lectures, dances and arts and crafts. Classes are conducted in Conference Room A of the Putnam City Center, 5604 N.W. 41st. Students enrolled in the Putnam City Indian Education program will be notified of class dates.

Putnam City Youth Powwow

The Putnam City Youth Powwow is an annual event that is held in honor of all K-12 Native American students in the district. It's a time for students, parents, teachers and the community to come together and experience the Native American culture through dance and song. Dancers and singers from the Putnam City school district and throughout the state are invited to attend. The event is free and open to the public.

Summer Native Cultural Class

Students in kindergarten through grade 7 who are enrolled with the Putnam City Department of Indian Education are invited to attend a summer cultural class at no charge. The class includes pottery, basket making, beadwork, traditional arts and crafts and more. For more information please call 495-5200, 495-5200, ext. 1650.

Native American Clubs

Native American clubs are comprised of students in each of the Putnam City high schools. Students meet at their individual schools to discuss current issues and topics important to Native American teenagers. The club members also determine what cultural, social and/or service projects they will undertake during the school year. The Native American clubs are a visible presence and an active voice for Native American students at their schools. Contact our office to find out who your school sponsor is and how to join.

Monthly district meetings are held with all Native American club members. Students meet in the Putnam City Center Conference Room A to report and find out what other clubs are doing. Motivational speakers, storytellers, musicians, business people, etc., are invited to each meeting to share their knowledge and experience with the students.

Choctaw Star Program

The Choctaw Nation Star Program is an educational incentive program that recognizes and rewards the academic excellence of Choctaw students and encourages them to achieve success in the classroom. Recognition incentives happen twice per academic year. Monetary gift cards are awarded based on grades and perfect attendance.
