Health Screenings and Services

Below is a list of the health screenings that are available for your child at school. Academic priorities and time needed by the school nurses and health aides for other responsibilities determine when these can be done at each school. If you would like your child screened in any of the areas listed, please call your school nurse or health aide to make arrangements for this to be done.

Vision Screening

Putnam City’s school nurses can screen your child for vision problems at any time during the school year, make referrals, and offer financial help if that is needed. If you do want your child screened, please call the school and talk to the nurse or health aide.

Hearing Screening

Putnam City’s school nurses can screen your child for hearing problems at any time during the school year and make referrals as necessary. Please contact your school nurse or health aide if you have a concern about your child’s hearing and would like your child screened.

Height and Weight Measurements

These measurements can be used for determining BMI (Body Mass Index). This index helps assess students for being underweight, overweight or at risk of becoming overweight. Please contact your school nurse or health aide if you want the measurements taken.

Blood Pressure

The average blood pressure levels are on the rise among American children and teenagers. This rise has been related to the concurrent increase in the prevalence of being overweight and to obesity plaguing our nation. If you would like your child’s blood pressure taken and/or followed, please call your school nurse or health aide.

Scoliosis

Scoliosis is the lateral curvature of the spine. Please call the school if you would like your child screened for this. This screening requires that the child remove his/her shirt so that the spinal column can be seen and also his/her shoes so that they are standing flat.
