Ralph Carlstrom, the shop foreman and lead mechanic for the Putnam City Schools Transportation Department, was in mid-June awarded the 2018 Oklahoma Association of Pupil Transportation (OAPT) Mechanic of the Year Award. The award, which recognizes Carlstrom’s service and expertise, is the highest honor given by the OAPT to a school district mechanic.

Carlstrom has worked for Putnam City Schools for 15 years. He oversees needed maintenance and repair of 134 school buses and the service trucks, dump trucks, tractors, trailers and heavy equipment used to maintain district schools. He has also served the OAPT in recent years as a school bus inspection trainer.

Joel Illgen, the director of Putnam City’s Transportation Department, says Carlstrom’s award is merited.

“Ralph has served the district with distinction. He is dependable, honest and safety-minded. He is willing to try new approaches and cares about his work and the work of others in his department. He has high expectations and makes sure buses are ready to serve students. In every way he is a leader who helps us be good stewards of district equipment. His honor is well deserved,” Illgen says.
