Proficiency-Based Promotion Tests

To maximize academic growth opportunities for students in Putnam City Schools, the district has established a Proficiency-Based Promotion (PBP) program for students in kindergarten through grade 12. The parameters for this program are specified in House Bill 1017. This program provides students the opportunity to move ahead in their educational efforts by demonstrating proficiency in one or more curriculum areas.

Exams are provided twice a year at the Putnam City Administration Building, 5401 N.W. 40th.

Registration forms are made available in April of each school year.

Elementary School
For full-grade promotion an evaluation of "proficient" must be assessed in the areas of English Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies.

High School and Middle School
If exams are passed at the 90 percent proficiency level, a student will receive credit and may be promoted to the next level of study. Credit earned in high school courses will count toward meeting graduation requirements. After counseling with appropriate school personnel, a letter grade of “A” or “Pass” will be denoted on the student's transcript as PBP. No record of unsuccessful attemp
ts will be mai
ntained in a student’s permanent record.

Most exams are multiple choice. However, some areas such as language arts, science, and foreign language may have additional or different requirements. See your student’s principal or counselor for additional information. Fifth-grade students should apply through their feeder middle school.

In preparation for testing Putnam City Schools recommends studying the Oklahoma standards for the area tested. The Oklahoma standards can be reviewed at the Oklahoma State Department of Education’s website.

Results will be mailed within two weeks of each testing date to allow for scoring and evaluation.
