ACT scores of the Putnam City’s 2006 graduates increased in every area compared to 2005 graduates and continued to be higher than state averages, ACT reported in mid-August.
The composite score for 2006 Putnam City graduates was 21.8, compared to 21.3 the year before. Increases were also seen in each subject area tested, the report shows. The scores reported by ACT are:
- In English, the average score for 2006 graduates was 21.7, compared to 21.2 the year before.
- In math, district students averaged 20.7 in 2006, compared to 20.4 the year before.
- In reading, 2006 district graduates’ average score was 22.5, compared to 22.0 the previous year.
- In science, 2006 district graduates earned an average score of 21.6, compared to 21.3 the year before.
Not only did district ACT scores increase in every area, but they also continued to top state averages by at least a full point in every area. District scores also topped national averages in every area but math, where it was 1/10 of a point lower.
Dr. Melani Mouse, assistant superintendent for Secondary Education, says the district appreciates the improvement but sees more work to be done.
"The scores reflect the reality that Putnam City students are performing at levels above state and national averages. That’s fine, but it’s not a stopping point. We want to continue to improve instruction, monitor students’ academic progress and intervene when students need it. We want to do everything possible to make sure our students are prepared to succeed in college, career and life," says Mouse.
