Barbara Minton, a business teacher at Putnam City High School, has won first place in a statewide lesson plans contest sponsored by The Oklahoma Society of Certified Public Accountants (OSCPA)
Minton, a Business Professionals of America and Future Business Leaders of America sponsor, was selected for the grand prize for her entry, "Monopolize Accounting." The lesson uses Monopoly game boards and asks students to enter journal entries for money transactions and allows students to apply everyday principles to the accounting cycle.
As the first place winner, Minton will receive a $500 award and Putnam City High School will receive a $200 award, to be used in Minton’s academic department.
"We had really good entries, all deserving of awards. However, the committee chose Ms. Minton’s lesson plan for first place because it employed the basic concepts of accounting and showed students how those lessons are used in everyday activities and business transactions," says Lysa Park, CPA, Accounting Careers Committee Chair for OSCPA.
The contest was created to encourage educators to share best practices for teaching accounting, business, economics and personal finance lessons.
