Elementary Test Scores Improve
Achievement by district elementary students on state tests of proficiency in reading, math and other subjects has improved in every area where comparisons can be made, district officials say after reviewing results of tests taken by students in 2004 and 2005.
The percentage of district fifth-graders scoring at a satisfactory or advanced level rose in five subject areas, says Sue Kuntze, assistant superintendent of Elementary Education. The percent of district fifth-graders scoring satisfactory or above in math increase from 75 percent in 2004 to 86 percent in 2005. Fifth-graders scoring satisfactory or above in reading rose from 74 percent in 2004 to 82 percent in 2005. In science, the percent of fifth-graders scoring satisfactory or advance went from 80 percent in 2004 to 82 percent in 2005. Fifth-graders scoring satisfactory or above in social studies rose from 64 percent in 2004 to 69 percent in 2005. In writing, the percent of fifth-graders scoring satisfactory or advance jumped from 61 percent in 2004 to 74 percent in 2005.
District fifth-graders are above state averages in reading and math, even with the state average in social studies and just one point below the state average in science. There is no state average yet for writing scores.
Last year was the first year of state testing in third and fourth grades, so no comparison can yet be made as to whether scores are improving. However, the percentage of Putnam City third- and fourth-graders who scored satisfactory or better on reading and math tests is comparable to state averages for 2005.
