Putnam City Students Recognized as AP Scholars
Eighty-one students from Putnam City high schools earned the designation of AP Scholar from the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on college-level Advanced Placement Program (AP) Exams taken last spring.
Just 18 percent of about 1.4 million high school students in more than 16,000 secondary schools worldwide who took AP exams performed at a sufficiently high level to merit recognition as an AP Scholar.
The number of district students to receive the recognition is increasing year by year. In 2006, 71 district students were designated as AP Scholars. In 2005, 60 district students were recognized as
AP scholars, while in 2004 just 46 district students were so honored.
“We’ve worked very hard to increase the number of student who take AP courses. We’re also working hard to ensure that if students are in the class that they take the exam. If finances are a barrier we find a way make taking the tests a possibility,” says Dr. Melani Mouse, assistant superintendent for Secondary Education.
Students took AP Exams in May 2007 after completing challenging college-level courses at their high schools. Most of the nation's colleges and universities award credit, advanced placement or both based on successful performance on the AP Exams.
The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on the number of year-long courses and exams.
AP Scholar with Distinction
One Putnam City High student, three Putnam City West students and 11 Putnam City North High School students earned “AP Scholar with Distinction” recognition, granted to students who receive an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams on full-year courses.
AP Scholar with Honor
Seven students from Putnam City West and nine students from Putnam City North earned “AP Scholar with Honor” status. AP Scholar with Honor status is granted to students who receive an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams on full year courses.
AP Scholar
Eight Putnam City High students, 12 Putnam City West students and 31 Putnam City North students earned recognition as an AP Scholar. The recognition is granted to students who receive grades of 3 or higher on three or more AP exams on full-year courses.
