Putnam City West High School’s Performing Arts Department offers Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s magical musical adventure, Into the Woods, on Friday, Nov. 4, and Saturday, Nov. 5. Shows begin at 7:30 p.m. both evenings. Tickets are $6 for adults and $5 for students.
This lively and humorous Tony Award-winning musical intertwines the lives of well-known storybook characters Cinderella, Jack (of beanstalk fame), Little Red Riding Hood and Rapunzel with an original story about a childless baker and his wife. A search through the woods by the baker and his wife for a cow, a red cape, a golden slipper and yellow hair to reverse a witch’s curse leads the characters down unexpected paths and challenges notions of what it means to live happily ever after.
When the comic and moving Into The Woods first hit Broadway in 1987, it was called "the most imaginative musical of the season – a major theatrical event" by Jeffrey Lyons, then a theatre critic for WCBS-TV. The play’s soaring melodies and witty dialogue caused it to become a Broadway blockbuster.
In the production at Putnam City West, cast members include Meghan Fossey as Little Red Riding Hood; David Bowden as Jack, the giant killer; Kaleigh Hamilton as Milky White, Jack's cow; Elizabeth Logan as Cinderella; Kyle Platt and Jessica Sims as the baker and his wife, and many others.
