Beard is the author of several books for children, including The Flimflam Man, which is based on a silly-but-true incident in 1950 that led to one of Oklahoma’s most unusual annual festivals, The Wetumka Sucker Day Festival; and Twister, a book released just a few weeks before Oklahoma’s May 3rd twister that wreaked havoc in 1999.
Half the funding for Beard’s visits comes from the elementary schools where she makes presentations. The other half is being covered by funds provided by the Putnam City Public Schools Foundation from a donation by the Kirkpatrick Family Fund.
