Candy Goes to Bin, Not Binge
In a Putnam City elementary school where fitness awareness is so high that some students and teachers wear pedometers to track the number of steps they take each day, fitness recently took one more big step.
On Wednesday, Nov. 1, almost 200 students brought some of their Halloween candy to school and traded it in for fruit snacks, trail mix, pretzels, bookmarks, play dough and pencils. Students who participate will have their names entered in drawings for games and toys that require physical activity, such as hula hoops, Twister, and Jump N Jive. The "Treat ‘n Trade" event was the idea of students who are members of the school’s Healthy Lifestyles Committee.
"We really didn't know for sure what to expect since this was our first year to try this. What happened is that a very large bin for candy is not just full, but overflowing. Students are taking to heart the message that they need to be fit, eat healthy foods and get plenty of exercise," says Kelly Suchy, principal.
