Two Putnam City students have been named Fleming Scholars and will spend much of the summer working in laboratories at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation (OMRF). Jackson Turner of Putnam City West High School and Jordan Wulf of Putnam City North High School are two of 12 new Fleming Scholars who will spend eight weeks this summer working side-by-side with senior scientists at OMRF in Oklahoma City.
The Fleming Scholar program offers a first look at research outside a classroom and opens doors to a wide range of career options.
Since 1956, more than 400 gifted Oklahoma science students have taken advantage of this one-of-a-kind program to complete a medical research project in a real-world laboratory. More than 100 have gone on to become physicians and scientists, including three current members of OMRF’s scientific staff.
"Eights weeks literally can change a life," says OMRF President Stephen M. Prescott, M.D. "Topics that were once mind-boggling become comprehensible. Challenges are overcome, and friendships are forged."
Fleming scholarships include housing and a $3,000 stipend.
