Student Achievements

Hefner Middle School students in the 6th, 7th and 8th grade PEAK classes participated in the State TIVY Math Tournament in mid-May. There were more than 450 students from schools around the state who participated in the tournament. The Hefner students won first place team trophies in all three grade levels. There were also students who won individual trophies for their accomplishments. In 6th grade, Sam Foss won first place and Connor Hamilton won third place. In 7th grade, Courtney King won second place and Lucas Adams won third place. In 8th grade, Zach Nicek won second place and Elizabeth Roewe won third place. These students are coached by Ann Chesney and Barbara Fowler.

The Cooper Middle School 7th and 8th grade band competed at the Music Festivals Showcase in Dallas in mid-May and brought home top honors, including:

  • Outstanding Soloist: Cory Shryock, Alto Sax
  • Outstanding Section: Tubas
  • Outstanding Section: Percussion
  • First Place: Middle School Division
  • First Place Overall, regardless of division

Putnam City High School’s Pirate Log newspaper received a Division 1 "All Oklahoman" newspaper award during the OSM/OIPA Spring Media event held at the University of Oklahoma in early April. In addition, a few individuals received awards for their writing abilities in their specific areas:

  • Jenefar de Leon, Honorable mention, Unsigned Editorial
  • Kayla Nichols, Honorable mention, Sports News
  • McKinsey O'Neal, Honorable mention, News

Putnam City North High’s North Star newspaper. The paper received the top award of All Oklahoman with Highest Honors at the same competition in mid-April. Individuals receiving state awards include:

  • Gretchen Decker, First Place, Inside Page Design
  • Hannah Decker, Second Place, Personality Profile
  • LaRon Chapman, Second Place, Critical Review; Second Place, Entertainment
  • Taylor Jorgensen, Third Place, Sports News
  • Mary Haikin, Third Place, Inside Page Design
  • Nathan Hatcher, Third Place, Inside Spread Design

Putnam City North High School’s orchestra placed first among string orchestras, received superior ratings and earned the Gold Award and the Adjudicator’s Award at the recent Heritage Festival in Chicago.

Congratulations Putnam City West orchestra for being the first orchestra in the state to qualify for the Sweepstakes Accent Award.

Students from Ralph Downs Elementary School won first place in the elementary school category of the Oklahoma Centennial Collage Competition for 2007, sponsored by Hideaway Pizza. This is the second year in a row Ralph Downs students have won first place in the elementary division.

The Putnam City High School drama team competed at the state drama tournament in mid-April.

  • Jeff Bragg and Chaz Wood took sixth place in humorous duet
  • Chaz Wood also took third overall in monologue
  • Lindsay Pittman was the state runner-up in dramatic interpretation
  • Lindsay Pittman also took top honor of being state champion in prose
  • Ryan Jones was the state runner-up in prose
