Hilldale Students Prepare for Colonial Day

On Feb. 2, Hilldale Elementary 5th-graders attended Colonial Day at the State Capitol. Getting more than 80 5th-graders into Colonial costumes was a task that took everyone's help.

Boys often needed help with their ties. Here, a student is helped by a classmate.

Other students lined up in front of teachers for help.

At one point, some of the 5th-grade girls decided makeup was in order. A group of bonneted girls watches the makeup go on a classmate.

The final touch: tri-cornered hats for the boys.

With costumes on, students board the bus for the trip to the Capitol.

At the Capitol, Founding Father Benjamin Franklin congratulates Hilldale 5th-grader Kacie Mills, who was named winner of the 2007 Colonial Day at the Capitol Literature Contest. Mills won a $100 savings bond for her winning poem. Also pictured with Kacie (from left) are teachers Carla Jo Carter and Christine Clay and principal Patty Balenseifen.
