Scholarships Available for Scholar Athletes

Each year, America’s Milk Processors recognize 25 high school senior student athletes nationwide with a $7,500 scholarship for their achievements in academics, athletics, community service and leadership.

This year, the hunt is on again as it's time to kick off the 2005 Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year (SAMMY) awards.

The eighth annual SAMMY scholarship program exists to recognize and reward outstanding scholar athletes in grade 12. Each of the 25 national SAMMY Award winners receive a $7,500 college scholarship, an all-expenses paid trip to a special awards ceremony at The Milk House at Disney's Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Fla., and an opportunity to be pictured in a special milk mustache ad in USA Today.

A panel of educators and coaches will narrow applications down to 75 finalists. A panel of celebrity athletes (Jason Kidd, Mia Hamm, Tony Hawk, Brad Johnson, Michelle Kwan and Andy Roddick) will then choose the 25 winners.

High school senior scholar athletes may nominate themselves, or may be nominated by teachers, coaches, athletic directors, principals, counselors, parents, relatives or friends.

The program’s partners are USA Today, the American Association of School Administrators, the National Association of Sport and Physical Education, the American School Counselor Association and the National School Public Relations Association.

Applications may only be submitted online by visiting

The SAMMY scholarship program rewards high school scholar athletes who know the importance of good nutrition to help fuel academic and athletic activity. Applicants will be required to describe in 75 words or less how drinking milk has been a part of their life and training regimen.

Deadline for entries is March 4, 2005. Winners will be selected in June 2005.
