Two Putnam City art educators have been honored by the National Art Education Association (NAEA).

Barbara Gabel, fine arts curriculum specialist for the district, has been named National Supervision/Administration Award Art Educator of the Year by the NAEA. The award is given for exemplary contributions and achievement of national significance.

Gabel has been Putnam City’s art coordinator since 1989. She has served in numerous capacities with the Oklahoma Art Education Association, is chair of the State Superintendent’s Arts Excellence Awards and the Oklahoma Alliance for Arts Education, and is a member of the leadership committee for the Kennedy Center Alliance for Art Education Network in Washington, D.C.

Donna Kirkevold, an art teacher at Putnam City Academy, has been named Western Region Secondary Art Educator of the Year by the NAEA. In September, Kirkevold was named Oklahoma Secondary Art Educator of the Year by the Oklahoma Art Education Association recognize outstanding service and achievement.

Kirkevold has taught art for more than 30 years, the last 13 at Putnam City Academy. Kirkevold is a member of the Oklahoma Art Education Association and the National Art Education Association. She has a bachelor’s degree in arts in Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota.

The awards will be presented at the NEAE’s national convention in March 2007.
