Golden Apples Awarded

At the Dec. 5 meeting of the Putnam City Board of Education, six people were awarded Golden Apples by the Putnam City Public Schools Foundation. Here are the honorees along with the write-ups that Foundation representatives read at the board meeting:

Neil Hill, Teacher, Putnam City West High School

Neil Hill has been a teacher of the highest caliber for 17 years. The Advanced Placement U.S. History program at Putnam City West has greatly expanded under his direction. What distinguishes Neil Hill from other teachers is his extraordinary commitment. His compassion, dedication, sense of humor, and authority extend into life outside of teaching. His teaching doesn’t stop at 3:45 p.m. He takes students on trips to Europe during the summer to see places that they read about in their textbooks. During a recent prom, he stood out in the rain to escort the students to the door, holding an umbrella over their heads so they would stay dry. He knew how much the night meant to the students and was willing to be soaking wet for them. As one student writes, “The knowledge that I received from Mr. Hill goes beyond scholastic. He is willing to listen to my problems and logically figure out a solution or show compassion and patience by helping his students who have learning disabilities. Most of his previous students think of him as our friend.”
