A Putnam City North High School high school student has her disability contest-winning poster on display on billboards across Oklahoma City. Leah Leger won first place in the poster/billboard contest sponsored by the Oklahoma City Mayor’s Committee on Disability Concerns (MCDC) for 2007.
Her poster, which displays the face of a young woman observing several people with disabilities, portrays the theme "1907-2007 Raising Disability Awareness." The theme ties into the state Centennial celebration.
Leger was one of scores of entries in the annual contest. She received $500 from the Mid America Chapter of the Paralyzed Veterans of America as a prize.
Oklahoma City and the committee observe National Disability Employment Awareness Month each October. Leger’s poster is on display earlier.
"The Mayor's Committee on Disability Concerns decided to display the poster this spring so Ms. Leger and her schoolmates could see the billboards before they left classes," says MCDC Chair Pam Henry.
Henry says the mayor's poster and billboard contest is one of the few in the United States that displays a student's winning poster on billboards.
