More than 20 committees consisting of Putnam City North High School students, staff and parents are busily working to ensure hundreds of the state’s best and brightest high school students enjoy a meaningful experience during the 67th Annual State Student Council Convention scheduled for Nov. 3-5 at Putnam City North.
The theme for the convention is "Oklahoma Leadership: The Best in the West."
"After much deliberation, we selected this theme for the 2007 Oklahoma Association of Student Councils (OASC) convention because it ties into Oklahoma’s Centennial Celebration and because it offers many different aspects that we can use to make our convention the greatest event OASC has ever experienced," says State Student Council Secretary Caitlyn Kutch, a Putnam City North junior.
Kutch says students are working hard to make the convention memorable.
"Approximately, 2,000 students and sponsors from throughout Oklahoma will visit our school in anticipation of a wonderful weekend. We plan to give them not only a wonderful weekend but an amazing memory as well. The task of planning the convention is complex and difficult, but we’re all looking forward to the experience," Kutch says.
According to Putnam City North’s Student Council advisor, Mrs. Kathy Kutch, Putnam City North students began forming committees and planning - choosing a theme, speakers, and activities - shortly after being named the 2007 conference host site.
"This is an excellent opportunity to showcase Oklahoma’s student leaders," Mrs. Kutch says.
Nearly all aspects of the convention are student-led with assistance from various adult advisors, area businesses and institutions. The conference will benefit the community as well as the student leaders who participate.
"There is absolutely no leadership curriculum that could be purchased that could compare to what these students will learn by taking part in the planning of the 2007 OASC State Student Council Convention," Mrs. Kutch says.
As with any undertaking of this size, students planning the convention welcome any and all help with housing, donations and exhibit hall vendor booths.
People with questions concerning housing of delegates or who wish to make a donation should email Kathy Kutch at oasc2007@putnamcityschools.org
Individuals or companies interested in purchasing booth space at the convention should contact Justine Mankin at 618-7372.
