A group of PEAK students at Ralph Downs Elementary School class was awarded second place in the elementary division in the Hideaway Foundation Oklahoma Collage Competition. The gifted program at Ralph Downs received a check for $750.
Jordyn Hamlin, a Hefner Middle School student, won the Aza's Choice Award in a statewide art contest sponsored by the Oklahoma City Zoo and Dr Pepper.
The Hefner 8th Grade Quiz Bowl Teams took top honors at the Regional Tournament at Highland East Junior High in Moore in early March. Team One captured second place and Team Two won first. The two Hefner teams played each other in the championship round with an exciting final score of 205 to 190. Both teams have now qualified to compete in the State Tournament at the University of Oklahoma in April. Congratulations to Team One, composed of Parker Banks, Houston Gandy, Zane Riggs, Kyle Choate and Tripp Walcher; and Team Two, composed of Nathan Thomas, Aditi Jalla, Cody Chism, Conner King and Trey Witzel.
Congratulations to Cody Chism, 8th grade student, who represented Hefner Middle School in the Oklahoma Geographic Bee held April 1, 2005 at the University of Oklahoma. After winning first place at Hefner in the fall he took a written tes to qualify him for state competition. The Oklahoma Geographic Bee is sponsored by the National Geographic Society.
Jeff Cartmell, a senior at Putnam City West High School, has been nominated to attend the Global Youth Leadership Conference in Budapest, Hungary, this summer. Cartmell, who is concurrently enrolled at Oklahoma State University, also has been named to the National Dean's List. Just 1/2 of 1 percent of college students receive this distinction.
Putnam City High School Junior, Maria J. (Chuya) Lopez, was chosen "Latino Leader of the Month" by Oklahoma City's Latino Community Development Agency. Chuya will be featured in a infomercial celebrating Oklahoma's Hispanic Youth on COX Cable.
District students went to Junior Classical League (state convention for Latin club) in late March. Two Putnam City High School students were elected to state offices. Elizabeth Billingsley was elected second vice president for the state and Thomas Willison was elected secretary.
