Lessons from the Dust Bowl

As part of their Oklahoma heritage unit, students in two fourth-grade classes at James L. Dennis Elementary School undertook an extensive study of the Dust Bowl. From their contact with Dust Bowl survivors, students learned not just Oklahoma history, but also the values of an older generation who persevered through tough times by supporting and helping each other.

Seventy-one years ago, Oklahomans and much of the Midwest suffered through a devastating disaster: Black Sunday. After weeks of studying the Dust Bowl, students in two James L. Dennis fourth-grade classes wrote about Black Sunday as if they had lived through it.

Black Sunday: One Student's Account

On April 14, 1935, a brutal dust storm turned day into night. Black Sunday, as the day came to be known, was a noteworthy day in the Dust Bowl era. After extensive study of the Dust Bowl, students were asked to write about Black Sunday as if they had lived during that time.
