Coronado Heights Elementary School 2nd-grade student Victoria Stover won first place among state 2nd-graders for her poster (right) for the Oklahoma Poison Prevention Contest. As a result of her prize-winning effort, Stover, school health aide Diane Sjong and teacher Julie Parker met former governor George Nigh and toured the Oklahoma Poison Prevention Center.

Overholser Elementary School 5th-grader Alisha Mains had her work selected to hang in a special exhibit at the office of Sandy Garrett, State Superintendent of Education, as part of the Superintendent’s Elementary Showcase sponsored by the Oklahoma Art Education Association.

Ralph Downs Elementary School faculty used art to aid in learning lessons about successful schools. At a staff development retreat earlier this year, teachers fused glass for jewelry while delving into the fusion of people and qualities necessary for schools to succeed. In fused glass, layers of glass blend together to form a piece of art. In schools, layers of stakeholders (students, parents, teachers, support staff, administrators, etc. ) blend together for student achievement. Whether with fused glass or schools, all layers – whether distinctly visible or not – contribute to the final goal. Dr. Nona Burling, principal (below), shows off a necklace she created.fused glass art
