MAPS For Kids Projects
Project: Lighting upgrades in three middle school gyms, sound system upgrades in all middle school gyms
Background: Upgrades are needed for school assemblies and performances.
Cost: $289,425 (estimate)
Status: Approved by Putnam City Board in April 2008. Must be pproved by MAPS Trust.
Project: Replacement of scoreboards in 24 gymnasiums.
Background: Scoreboards are used for a variety of games and events at every level. The new scoreboards are necessary because parts are no longer available for many of the aging scoreboards now in place.
Cost: $172,000 (estimate)
Status: Approved by Putnam City Board in January 2008. Approved by MAPS Trust.
Project: Construction of a new Central Elementary School building
Background: Putnam City is using a combination of MAPS for Kids funds and bond funds to cover the $10,675,000 cost of replacing 76-year-old Central Elementary Schools with a new school building.
Cost: $1,675,740 in MAPS for Kids funds
Status: Approved by Putnam City Board in October 2007. Approved by MAPS Trust in October 2007. Construction in progress.
Project: Renovation of science labs at Putnam City West High School.
Background: The science labs at Putnam City West High School are about 40 years old. Refurbishing and remodeling these six labs will allow for more student work space and better science instruction. Renovation will include new lab furniture, new flooring, new electrical, water and gas service, installation of new safety equipment, better ventilation and more proper storage of equipment and chemicals.
Cost: $628,600
Status: Complete.

Project: Renovation of backstage area of Putnam City High School auditorium
Background: Funds will be used to the backstage area more functional and more safe. A dressing room will be moved from a second level to stage level. Rigging controls will move from stage level to a second level. A new scene shop will be built and the sloped auditorium roof will be leveled. Project: Installation of artificial turf at three high schools
Background: At Putnam City North and Putnam City West, artificial turf football fields will be installed. At Putnam City High, artificial turf installation will create a single field for baseball and softball.
Cost: $2.7 million
Status: Complete.
Project: Upgrade of auditoriums at three high schools, Capps Middle School
Background: Funds will be used to replace outdated sound and light systems, replace worn carpet, refurbish stage floors, replace some seating and make other improvements in high school auditoriums.
Cost: $4.46 million
Status: Complete.
Project: Purchase of about 20 school buses
Background: Thousands of students each day ride buses to school. Newer buses mean less maintenance and greater rider safety.
Cost: $1.2 million
Status: Complete.

Project: Installation of secure access entrances at 18 district schools
Background: These funds will pay for structural changes at 18 schools so that visitors to each school would be funneled to the school office. Visitors will gain entrance to classrooms and hallways only after being cleared by office staff.
Cost: $250,000 (estimate)
Status: Approved by Putnam City Board in February 2005. Approved by MAPS Trust in March 2005. Projects at Central Elementary, Central Intermediate, Lake Park Elementary, Overholser Elementary, Western Oaks Elementary, Wiley Post Elementary, Capps Middle School, Western Oaks Middle School, Putnam City West High School and Putnam City High School are complete. Hefner Middle School and Putnam City North High School also have secure access entrances in place, but those projects were done with bond funds.
Project: Putnam City Stadium improvements
Background: Improvements at the stadium include renovations of the track, press box and visitor’s restrooms. The track and the areas used for high jump, long jump and pole vault was replaced with a new rubberized surface. An upper level, restrooms and an elevator were added to the press box. The visitor’s restroom was expanded and modified to meet ADA requirements. In addition, a new scoreboard and two 25-second clocks were added to the stadium. The existing scoreboard was moved to the middle school stadium.
Cost: $2 million

Project: Replacement of iMac labs in elementary schools
Background: The Macintosh computers used by students in labs in each of the district’s 18 elementary schools were obsolete. They were slow, could no longer be upgraded and were expensive to service. New software was not available to run on the old computers. The project replaced old iMacs with 540 new models (30 per school) configured with educational software.

Project: Renovation of the HVAC system at Putnam City West High School
Background: The HVAC system at Putnam City West is in need of extensive renovation. This request would fund repair of the boiler and chiller and replace HVAC units throughout the building.
Cost: $1.4 million (estimate)
Status: Approved by Putnam City Board in April 2004. Approved by the MAPS Trust. Project is in progress.
Project: Replacement of gymnasium floors in 11 schools
Background: For reasons of safety and aesthetics, 12 gym floors in 11 schools were replaced. The old artificial floors had bubbles, chipping and cracking that could have caused students to fall. Wooden floors had dead areas and had been refurbished enough that there was little more that could be done other than replacement. Gym floors were replaced at these schools:

Project: Purchase of instructional technology
Background: The district understandably focuses its technology purchases on computers and related equipment. However, teachers still need other types of equipment to provide instruction for district students. These funds paid for equipment such as overhead projectors, VCRs, DVD players and recorders, video cameras, etc. Each of the district’s 27 school developed a list of needs; new equipment was purchased for every school.

Project: Renovation of portions of the PC Center to house the Putnam City Academy
Background: Putnam City Academy is the district’s alternative high school and typically serves 125 to 150 students. In its old space on N.W. 23rd, the Academy was at its limit in terms of students it can accommodate. The new Academy space in the PC Center allows the district to serve more students. In addition, larger classroom space is more conducive for learning. A more centralized location in the PC Center makes it easier for students and parents to get to, and the new location increases safety for students who no longer have to cross 23rd street.

Background: The marker boards replace cracked, broken and outdated chalk boards in several schools.

Project: Elevators for schools
Background: Elevators were needed to better serve students, parents and staff with disabilities at Western Oaks Elementary School, Wiley Post Elementary School and Putnam City West High School.
Cost: $600,000

Project: Fascia replacement at Lake Park Elementary School
Background: The top three to four feet of Lake Park’s red brick exterior was covered in a painted plywood fascia. Due to water infiltration, the fascia began to rot, which could have lead to further building damage. The fascia was replaced with a waterproof material.
Cost: $150,066
Status: Complete.
Project: Phone systems for 18 elementary schools and four middle schools.
Background: The district installed new phone systems in all 18 district elementary schools and four middle schools. The new systems replaced antiquated analog phones with newer digital equipment driven by the district network. The advantages are cleaner reception, better quality sound and dependable service even if phone lines are down and fiber lines are cut. This purchase does not include a telephone in every classroom.

Project: Fire supressant sprinkler systems.
Background: Most buildings in the district were built before building codes required fire-supressing sprinkler systems. Addition of sprinkler systems will provide greater protection for school buildings and learning environments our patrons have invested in.

Status: Approved by Putnam City Board in June 2003. Project completed at Putnam City High School, Putnam City West High School, Putnam City North High School, Capps Middle School, Hefner Middle School and Tulakes Elementary School. Requests for individual schools or groups of schools will continue to be taken to the MAPS Trust for consideration.
Project: Bleachers in six school gymnasiums.
Background: Bleachers were replaced in gymnasiums in six district schools: Putnam City High School, Putnam City North High School, Putnam City West High School, Hefner Middle School, Mayfield Middle School and Western Oaks Middle School. The old bleachers had been in each school since the school was built, making some more than 40 years old. Safety concerns and the damage some bleachers were doing to floors were the reasons for replacement.

Project: HVAC at PC Center
Background: The central HVAC system has to be installed before additional district offices could occupy the building. At the time of replacement, the building contained the district enrollment office, visited by every family enrolling new students in the district, and the campus police, who provide help provide safety and security for district students, teacher and administrators. The long-term plan for the building calls for a number of district support functions to move in, as well as the district’s alternative high school.

Background: This expenditure enhanced security of our buildings and protects the investment made by our patrons.

Project: Improvements to Putnam City High School athletic facility
Background: The baseball field had just one unisex restroom facility. An updated and enlarged restroom facility at the Putnam City High School baseball field was not only needed, but required. The Americans with Disabilities Act requires handicapped accessible restrooms. The city required a fire line and hydrant so the new facility would meet code. A new concrete pad was poured for existing aluminum bleachers, and the bleachers were relocated to the pad. A rolling counter door was added to the snack bar.

Project: Fire line and fire hydrant at Putnam City North High School
Background: To accomodate a new restroom facility and concession area at the softball field at Putnam City North High School, a fire line and hydrant were added so the new facility will be up to code.

Project: Purchase of nine school buses
Background: These buses were obtained to replace older regular route buses and to serve as activity buses for schools. Thousands of students are transported on these buses. Newer buses mean less maintenance and greater rider comfort and safety.
