 A History of Help For nearly two decades as her children attended schools in Putnam City, Joy Fischer has been actively involved in helping schools and students be more successful.  Putnam City North Prom Dress Sale to Fight Cancer Putnam City North High School will hold a prom dress sale from 11a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 29, in the Upper Commons at Putnam City North, 11800 N. Rockwell. The prom dress sale, stocked with dresses, purses, shoes and jewelry brought in by local residents, is a fund-raiser for cancer research.

 A Bit of Math, a Bit of Life Putnam City West ESL students are working once a week with 6th-grade students at Western Oaks Middle School to help them with their math skills, serve as role models and give younger students insight into high school life. In addition, members of the OSU-OKC Hispanic Student Association mentor some 8th-grade students at Western Oaks.
 Topflight Astronaut John Herrington visited James L. Dennis Elementary School in late February to talk with 1st-grade students who were studying space. Above, Herrington makes a rocket using a film canister, water and an effervescent antacid.

 Kids Cook Up a Storm One student from each of Putnam City’s 18 elementary schools took part in the Second Annual Kids’ Culinary Contest sponsored by Putnam City’s Child Nutrition Department and Sodexho. The contest was intended to help teach students about good nutrition and how to create nutritious snacks that are simple to prepare and enjoyable to eat. The grand prize winner was Heidi DeLeon of Hilldale Elementary with her recipe for “Bunny Pears.”
 Easy as Pie Capps Middle School drama teacher Katherine Fossey was one of 18 Capps Middle School teachers, administrators and staff who volunteered to be lovingly pelted with pies by students in late February. The event was a fund-raiser to help send 48 students on a trip to the NASA Space Center in Houston in April. Funding for the trip is coming from a $3,000 grant from the Oklahoma NASA Space Grant consortium, donations from local businesses and fund-raisers at the school.
 Pretty in Pink Students at Lake Park Elementary School took part in cutting and coloring Principal John Lunn’s hair into a pink Mohawk in mid-March. Lunn’s new look was the result of students meeting a fund-raising challenge for the school's annual cancer drive. Students thinking pink raised $9,234.
 Good Cheer Seven Putnam City students are part of an 11-member team that is Oklahoma’s only special needs cheerleading squad. The team finished second in the nation in their category in the National Cheerleading Association championships in Dallas in mid-February. The team is coached by Putnam City North graduate David Owens, owner of Empire Elite cheerleading facility. Six district students hailing from Putnam City West, Mayfield Middle School and Cooper Middle School (also shown above) assist the team.
 Teacher Job Fair Set Teachers who want to teach in Putnam City are invited to attend the Putnam City Schools Teacher Job Fair from 2 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 15.
 Teacher of the Year Apollo Elementary School 2nd-grade teacher Star Gomez was named Putnam City Schools’ “Teacher of the Year” during the district’s annual celebration of teaching excellence in late February.
