They've Got Rhythm Northridge Elementary music teacher Jason Engelke listens to a composition by a fifth-grade student. Students are using the Apple program "Garage Band" to compose and record music. The program not only helps students learn musical concepts in a new way, but can also be used to create original music as soundtracks for student slideshows and other projects.

Students Squeeze Lessons Out of Pioneer Museum Kirkland Elementary students got the chance to try out old-fashioned methods of washing clothes at a traveling pioneer museum set up at the school in late April. Students also practiced grinding wheat into flour, rolling out bread dough, lathering their faces with a shaving brush and panning for gold.

Rock-solid Fun and Learning When artist-in-resident Dwe Williams visited Central Elementary School, student learned lessons in listening skills and in respect, appreciation and understanding. Above, students learn the importance of teamwork and community using rhythmic hand motions as they pass river rocks around a circle of students.

Turning Paper Into Cash Overholser Elementary School won first place in the Metro Area Abitibi two-bin recycling contest. In late April, the school received a check for $800. Windsor Hills Elementary finished second in the one-bin competition and received a check for $500.

Award-winning Staff Karla Stroud, a social studies teacher at Western Oaks Middle School, was named an Indaco Metals/KWTVTerrific Teacher in early May. Drew Keller of Indaco presented Stroud with a check for $250. Stroud is just one of many district staff members to be honored recently.
