Students Take Closer Look at Engineering CareersFour seniors from Putnam City High School students will get a closer look at their potential futures when they take part in the Engineer for a Day program on Thursday, Feb. 23. The job shadowing program, sponsored by the Oklahoma Society of Professional Engineers, matches metro-area high school juniors and seniors with local engineering professionals. Students will shadow engineers in the fields of aerospace, mechanical, civil, petroleum and other specialty areas.
Ginnyu Ngoran will shadow an engineer with C.H. Guernsey & Company. KamRen Smith will spend time with an engineer from The Boeing Company.Scott Mendenhall will shadow an engineer from Engineered Equipment Inc., and Shayna Borgfeld will follow two engineers with Terracon Consultants, Inc.
The Engineer for a Day program is intended to provide students information and encouragement to put them on an education path toward an engineering career.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, earnings for engineers vary significantly by specialty, industry and education, but as a group, engineers earn some of the highest average starting salaries among those holding a bachelor’s degree. Forbes Magazine goes a step further, saying engineering is the top-paying field for students coming out of college, adding that engineering job openings are expected to grow over the next decade.
