People interested in becoming a substitute teacher in Putnam City schools should plan to attend a mandatory orientation session, Dr. April Grace, the district’s executive director of Human Resources says.
Substitute teacher orientation sessions are scheduled for 9 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 11, and 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 16, in the board room of the district’s Administration Building, 5401 N.W. 40th. No advance registration is required to attend the orientation session.
For those interested in substitute teaching, a college degree is preferred but not required. People who attend the session should bring:
- Driver’s license
- Social Security card
- College transcript or diploma (if they have one)
- Teaching certificate (if they have one)
Grace says it’s important that the district have a pool of good substitute teachers.
"There are times when full-time teachers can’t be in the classroom because of illness, emergencies or other reasons. In such cases, good substitute teachers are invaluable because they allow instruction to continue,” Grace says.
According to Grace, people working as substitute teachers enjoy the chance to choose what days they’ll work, what schools they’ll work at and what subjects or grades they’ll teach. Substitutes who are certified teachers are paid $70 a day. Substitutes without active teacher certification receive $55 a day.
