Putnam City Make a Difference Program
Putnam City Schools is looking for 33 people who want to make a difference in children’s lives.
The people who are hired will fill positions in the Putnam City Make a Difference Program, working each school day to engage and enrich students in grades 3, 4 and 5 in after-school programs at seven district schools.
Timelines
• Applications can be submitted online starting Monday, Aug. 2.
• Applications will be accepted until the positions are filled. As of Sept. 10, the district is still looking to hire about 17 positions.
• Interviews are scheduled are taking place on a regular basis.
• The people filling the positions will be trained.
• The positions last through July 31, 2011.
Part-time Positions
30 people will be hired for part-time positions in after-school and summer enrichment programs, working about 3½ hours a day toward a total of 900 hours. The precise working hours have not yet been established but will be along the lines of 2:30 to 6 p.m. each school day. Bilingual capabilities are a plus for candidates for part-time jobs.
Full-time Positions
Three people will be hired to work full time – 40 hours a week. Like part-time employees, these people will help students in afterschool and summer enrichment programs. They will also serve in schools during the regular school day, primarily in support of students who are classified as English Language Learners. For these positions, the district is looking for people who can speak both English and Spanish fluently.

AmeriCorps Aspects
The program is funded primarily through a grant from the Oklahoma Community Service Commission to support the service of AmericaCorps members. People who become part of the Putnam City Make a Difference program become AmeriCorps members. Only AmeriCorps members may serve in the program. AmeriCorps is sometimes referred to as "the domestic Peace Corps." It is an agency committed to service in the U.S.
Compensation
By AmeriCorps guidelines, compensation for people hired for Putnam City’s Make a Difference program is termed a “living allowance.”
For people in the 30 part-time positions, the living allowance will be $567.91 a month for 11 months. In addition, part-time employees who complete their full 11-month commitment will receive an education stipend of $2,675.
For people in the three full-time positions, the living allowance will be $1072.73 a month for 11 months. In addition, full-time employees who complete their full 11-month commitment will receive an education stipend of $5,350.
The education stipend may be used to pay off qualified student loans or to finance college, graduate school or vocational training at eligible institutions. People over age 55 also have the option of giving their stipend to their child, grandchild or foster child, thereby helping a loved one with educational expenses.
How to Apply for the Program
Any American citizen 17 or older with a high school diploma and no criminal record may apply for the positions. Application can be made online.
