Thursday, May 27, Will be the Last Day of School in Putnam City

Putnam City’s board of education approved an updated calendar for the current school year that calls for the last day of classes to take place on Thursday, May 27.

Changes to the school calendar were necessary in order to account for six days of school lost to icy roads and cold temperatures. The board’s action means students will make up three of the six days.

Students have already made up one day, having attended school on Friday, Feb. 19. The original plan for Feb. 19 was for students to be out of school in relation to parent-teacher conferences.

In addition, the board action will require that students be in school on Wednesday, May 26, and Thursday, May 27.

The decision by the board means the district is taking advantage of flexibility offered by HB 1864, approved by legislators and signed by the governor in spring of 2009. As a way of helping districts cope with making up days lost to bad weather and bad roads, the law allows districts to define their school year by number of hours instead of number of days. The law says a school district must be in session a minimum of 1,050 hours.

At the end of the last day of school on Thursday, May 27, Putnam City elementary students will have logged 1, 124 hours; middle school students will have attended for 1,081 hours; and high school students will have been in class for 1,162 hours.
